Plantswomen’s Front Garden
London
Located in a conservation area in South London, this large front garden of a 1920s neo-vernacular style home had been neglected. Working with the planners from the start, we balanced their requirements with our client’s brief, retaining original features and adding details to suggest the garden’s historical context.
Newly laid herringbone paths and a reclaimed York stone driveway connect the garden with its heritage. Replacing the lawn with climate resilient gravel was practical as it is easy to maintain and provides extra parking.
The front door path is framed by a pair of bespoke yew pieces evoking the Arts & Craft movement which strongly influenced the architecture of the area. They were topiarised to order by a trusted nursery and have greened up perfectly to provide an evergreen welcome.
Ornamental trees and a splendid, variegated beehive holly create a picture of leafy suburbia. The densely planted borders with special shrubs, repeat-flowering roses, abundant perennials and bulbs in a palette of pinks, purples and white satisfy our client’s love of plants and provide nectar for bees and other pollinators.
Sharing this much-loved front garden has become a source of pleasure for our lovely client, as passers-by comment on its beauty and rich planting and enjoy it as much as she does.
