Country Cottage
Wiltshire
This chocolate box, thatched cottage needed a garden so it could ‘sing’ and bring its owners’ daily pleasure. With a horticultural pedigree and discerning eye, they asked us to transform their garden, reusing as much of the existing hard landscaping as possible, incorporating favourite plants named after family members, treasured sculptures and existing garden ornaments.
Working with a sustainability ethos, we lifted parts of the existing stone terrace to create richly planted borders to break up the space and create thriving environments for bees, insects and pollinators. Existing steps were both lethal and ugly, so these were redesigned and rebuilt. The low brick wall around the terrace was rendered to blend with its surroundings.
A new lavender garden enclosed by pleached trees creates a prettily planted link between the cottage and its outbuildings. Nectar rich perennials in tones of pinks, purples and whites, interspersed with masses of climbing roses and spring bulbs, create an idyllic picture. Espalier fruit trees planted along an old side wall add to the cottage charm.
Due to be planted in spring, this garden will be a transformation and promises to grow into a year-round haven for our clients.
